RyonaRPG drops you into a large, dangerous world with little forced direction. You are expected to talk to people, prepare for specific hazards and sometimes lose a character. This guide covers the first hour without turning the game into a walkthrough.
Before going to those dangerous dungeons and being abused by the monsters you better read these pages first...

* Game system: Details the basic controls, interface and character creation. Mostly standard RPGmaker2000 stuff.

Before you start
* Game FAQ: Covers some questions not explained elsewhere.

* Status: List of negative statuses and the way to remove them (most drugs can be bought from the village grocery)

* Traps: Focus on hidden traps first, they are more common.

Step One: Prepare Yourself
Launch the English edition
In the leftmost bedroom on the second floor of the inn:

* Talk to the maid to get your injury treated, otherwise you will bleed whenever you remove your bandages.

** Whenever you are injured in the future, you can talk to this maid here to get healed.

* Examine the book in the room on the left to get the "Girls Secret Diary"

* Examine the chest next to the book to get some gold (400g on Normal, 2000g on Easy, 100g on Insane)

Visit the Newbie House: Ray-On Village has a Newbie House, also known as Beginners' Pavilion. It explains some RyonaRPG gameplay concepts and lets new players test them out.

Extract the complete game folder, then run
PLAY NATIVE ENGLISH.bat
. Do not launch
RPG_RT.exe
for ordinary play. See Technical Help if the game does not start or the controls behave strangely.

Use several save slots. RyonaRPG has permanent location changes, character-specific states and events that can leave a character stranded in a dungeon.
* If you are a mage or battlemage, fire magic can deal with those creeps in Newbie Dungeon easily. Stay away from them and learn how to cast magic and hit them accurately. You may want to try the charged attack too. Later on you face some fast moving monsters, the charged attack with area damage will be useful.

* For warriors let's hope your weapon and armor are intact from Forest of Fate, and haven't been damaged. If not, or your starting outfit is too weak, you can try to play hit and blow to earn more money first. Without good armor even the weak monsters in the Newbie Dungeon can kill you easily. Get a few thousand coins then go to the weapon store. Some cheap items such as the 500g axe and the 100g shield are very useful. Some weapons, like that axe, are two handed weapons so you cannot equip left hand items, such as a shield. You can view the equipment page for details.

* If you have spare money you can buy the anti-capture and anti-poison items from the lady there. These are useful since when you go outside and fight you will face many different negative status and traps.

Press X to choose between the ordinary RPG Maker menu and RyonaRPG's Special Menu. The Special Menu handles equipment, magic, abilities, character information and most game-specific options.
Now that you have advanced some levels and have more cash on hand, go explore the world. Obtain information from NPCs to make them accessible from the map. Read the location walkthrough page to get them one by one. The locations at Devil's store and Capital Avalon are harder so you can skip these for now.

You do not need to empty every shop before your first trip. Start with equipment your character can use and a few answers to common status ailments.
+

+
* Buy a weapon with comfortable reach. Spears, swords and some spells let a new player keep safer spacing than fists or daggers. Two-handed weapons prevent you from equipping an off-hand shield.
+
* Keep Antidotes, Gold Needles and Holy Water for poison, paralysis and slime. Those ailments appear early and can be more dangerous than ordinary HP loss.
+
* Buy a status-protection accessory when you know which hazard a dungeon uses. See Status rather than trying to carry every cure.
+
* Keep a Whisperweed when possible. It creates a save opportunity and is consumed when used.
+
* Keep Black Ore as an emergency escape tool. It damages every enemy on the screen and grants temporary invincibility.
+

+
Enemies drop Potions often, so do not spend all your starting money stockpiling them. Equipment, status protection and emergency items usually make a larger difference.
+

+
Magic-users should equip a normal attack spell before leaving. Physical characters with enough MP can still benefit from an elemental Saber spell. Learning abilities consumes Crystal Shards, while magic uses Magirock; read Abilities and Magic before spending scarce early materials.
+

+
Learn how combat works
+

+
RyonaRPG uses action combat on ordinary maps. Trading hits at close range is rarely safe.
+

+
* Fight in open space when possible.
+
* Approach an enemy one tile away from its row or column, then attack as it moves into range.
+
* Hold the attack key to charge. Weapon type and weapon-skill level determine the resulting technique.
+
* Hold Shift to charge equipped normal magic. Press Cancel to discard an unwanted charge.
+
* Use walls, weapon reach and knockback. Many enemies are dangerous only when they can stand beside you.
+
* If you are knocked down, captured or frozen, press the Attack key repeatedly to recover or escape.
+
* Use healing items before the situation becomes desperate. Some disabling states prevent you from opening the menu.

Enemy families have different resistances. A weapon that destroys one enemy may barely hurt another. Enemy Types explains the broad rules; Enemies covers individual foes.

* Read equipment descriptions. Resistances and special properties matter as much as raw defense.

* Talk to NPCs again after clearing bosses or changing the time of day.

RyonaRPG drops you into a large, dangerous world with little forced direction. You are expected to talk to people, prepare for specific hazards and sometimes lose a character. This guide covers the first hour without turning the game into a walkthrough.

Before you start

Launch the English edition

Extract the complete game folder, then run PLAY NATIVE ENGLISH.bat. Do not launch RPG_RT.exe for ordinary play. See Technical Help if the game does not start or the controls behave strangely.

Use several save slots. RyonaRPG has permanent location changes, character-specific states and events that can leave a character stranded in a dungeon.

Pick a setup

Choose Choice-Based setup on a first playthrough. It explains each major option instead of presenting the full special-menu setup at once.

The four difficulty choices are:

 • V-MAX Mode is the beginner-friendly setting. Enemies are weaker, characters level faster and the setup can enable saving anywhere.
 • Normal Mode is the standard balance.
 • Mania Mode is intended for players who already understand the combat and equipment systems.
 • Char Custom Mode triples enemy stats. Do not choose it for a first game.

Many presentation and gameplay options can be changed later through the Maiden's Secret Diary. Not every initial character setting is meant to be changed freely, so read the setup descriptions before confirming them.

Pick a character you like

Characters differ far more than they would in a conventional RPG. Their movement speed, equipment access, magic, natural recovery and special talents can change how the game feels. See Characters when you want a detailed comparison.

Your first choice is not permanent. A Simple Cot in one of the ground-floor rooms of the RAYON Village inn opens the character-change menu. Some special character states and modes restrict changing characters.

Basic controls

Key Normal use Combat use
Arrow keys Move and select Move
Z or Enter Confirm and interact Attack; hold to charge a weapon attack
X or Esc Cancel; open the menu choice Cancel a charge
Shift Leave some towns or use a map shortcut Cast the equipped normal magic; hold to charge it

Press X to choose between the ordinary RPG Maker menu and RyonaRPG's Special Menu. The Special Menu handles equipment, magic, abilities, character information and most game-specific options.

Magic does nothing until you equip it through Special Menu → Magic. See Game System for advanced controls and Magic for spell mechanics.

Your first ten minutes

You begin around the RAYON Village inn. Before entering a dungeon:

 1. On the second floor, ask the nurse in your room to treat your severe wounds. Removing the starting bandages before treatment can make the bleeding return.
 2. Examine the blank notebook in the room. It becomes the Maiden's Secret Diary, which contains options, game information and debug tools.
 3. Open the nearby chests and take the starting money and supplies.
 4. Speak to the ninja on the second floor to learn about the Nearby Forest. A diamond-marked message tells you when a destination has been added to a world map.
 5. Save before leaving town.

Do not enable Debug Mode on your main save merely because the diary offers it. Debug changes can bypass progression or leave permanent switches in unusual states. Keep a separate save if you want to experiment.

Visit Beginner's Hall

Beginner's Hall is in RAYON Village. Its residents explain combat, status ailments, magic, enemy types and the abbreviations used in equipment descriptions.

The basement has a training dummy. Use it to learn weapon timing and raise low weapon-skill levels without fighting a live enemy. Higher weapon-skill levels unlock additional charge stages and weapon techniques.

The hall also leads to the Beginner Dungeon. Its enemies are suitable for early practice, but defeat there is real and may leave the character waiting to be rescued. Save first.

Buy a small survival kit

You do not need to empty every shop before your first trip. Start with equipment your character can use and a few answers to common status ailments.

 • Buy a weapon with comfortable reach. Spears, swords and some spells let a new player keep safer spacing than fists or daggers. Two-handed weapons prevent you from equipping an off-hand shield.
 • Keep Antidotes, Gold Needles and Holy Water for poison, paralysis and slime. Those ailments appear early and can be more dangerous than ordinary HP loss.
 • Buy a status-protection accessory when you know which hazard a dungeon uses. See Status rather than trying to carry every cure.
 • Keep a Whisperweed when possible. It creates a save opportunity and is consumed when used.
 • Keep Black Ore as an emergency escape tool. It damages every enemy on the screen and grants temporary invincibility.

Enemies drop Potions often, so do not spend all your starting money stockpiling them. Equipment, status protection and emergency items usually make a larger difference.

Magic-users should equip a normal attack spell before leaving. Physical characters with enough MP can still benefit from an elemental Saber spell. Learning abilities consumes Crystal Shards, while magic uses Magirock; read Abilities and Magic before spending scarce early materials.

Learn how combat works

RyonaRPG uses action combat on ordinary maps. Trading hits at close range is rarely safe.

 • Fight in open space when possible.
 • Approach an enemy one tile away from its row or column, then attack as it moves into range.
 • Hold the attack key to charge. Weapon type and weapon-skill level determine the resulting technique.
 • Hold Shift to charge equipped normal magic. Press Cancel to discard an unwanted charge.
 • Use walls, weapon reach and knockback. Many enemies are dangerous only when they can stand beside you.
 • If you are knocked down, captured or frozen, press the Attack key repeatedly to recover or escape.
 • Use healing items before the situation becomes desperate. Some disabling states prevent you from opening the menu.

Enemy families have different resistances. A weapon that destroys one enemy may barely hurt another. Enemy Types explains the broad rules; Enemies covers individual foes.

Choose a first destination

Three useful early destinations teach different lessons:

Destination Why visit Caution
Beginner Dungeon Weak enemies, traps and basic dungeon practice A defeated character may need rescue
Ancient Trial Grounds A short early trial available from the world map More dangerous than training inside Beginner's Hall
Nearby Forest Contains useful finds and leads toward the Mountain Cave Its fast enemies make it a poor place to stand and grind at level 1

To leave RAYON Village, press Shift or walk south through the opening below the fountain.

Do not worry if a destination feels too difficult. Return to town, change equipment or try another place. The danger symbols on the world map are estimates, not level requirements.

Unlock more of the world

Most world-map destinations appear after an NPC tells you about them. New information is announced with a diamond-marked message. Check these places early:

 • both floors of the RAYON Village inn;
 • the tavern;
 • the church;
 • Beginner's Hall;
 • the same locations at night, when different people may appear.

The game does not expect one fixed route through its optional content. Follow whichever rumor, request, or dungeon interests you. See Main Progression for the route to the final dungeon, and consult Locations when you need an unlock condition.

What happens when you lose

Defeat does not always mean the same thing. Depending on the enemy, location and character state, the game may return you to safety, play a special event, trigger an ending or leave the character inside the dungeon.

When the game asks whether to rescue a fallen character:

 1. Choose another available character.
 2. Examine the magic crystal ball in the RAYON Village item shop to locate the fallen character.
 3. Travel to that location and interact with the fallen character.
 4. Return to the RAYON Village inn and speak to the innkeeper.

Some captures move the fallen character away from the exact place where the defeat occurred. Trust the crystal ball rather than searching only the room where the fight ended. See H Events and Endings when you want the detailed outcomes and conditions.

Good habits

 • Save before every unfamiliar dungeon and rotate between several slots.
 • Restock Whisperweed, Black Ore and the status cures you used.
 • Read equipment descriptions. Resistances and special properties matter as much as raw defense.
 • Train charged attacks instead of relying only on normal attacks.
 • Retreat when an enemy ignores your damage. You may need another element, weapon family or special property.
 • Talk to NPCs again after clearing bosses or changing the time of day.
