The player takes on the role of a slaver in Eternal Rome. Some player characters are new arrivals that made their way through the Fogs while others have been in the city for some time but have been working in other professions.
On a Normal Start the player's is attempt to earn the status of Patrician, and thus honorary citizenship. To do this you need the backing of one of the heads of the five quarters within the city. To do this you'll need to build up your reputation with one of the Great Houses to gain the chance to curry favor with its Ruler or you can alternatively build up your brand status to Legendary so you can gain the chance at an audience with the Pope.
All of this is achieved, unsurprisingly, by training slaves.
There are also a few side missions, and a lot of customers with particular needs - some more involved than others.
Lastly, there is a Custom Start mode that allows you to customize your slaver as well as start as a Patrician if you choose to play on the Easy difficulty.

Eternal Rome sits at the border between dimensions and worlds, and is constantly surrounded by Fogs through which many people might find themselves in either by accident or design. The city has severe space and resource constraints; sparks are constantly expended to keep the Fogs at bay while manpower is needed to fight off any otherworldly beasts that could threaten the city. Due to its unique circumstances there is a constant influx of people and its otherworldly rulers have deemed that human life is a commodity. Slavery and human cannibalism are commonplace; one is either in the good graces of the city's inhuman rulers or is merely another meat bag at their mercy. Thankfully Eternal Rome's economy runs on human blood and as an up and coming slaver you're in a prime position to profit and live off of it.
The Vatican
The Vatican rules over White Town as well as all of the other quarters within Eternal Rome. They're responsible for the rules that govern the city as well as their enforcement. These laws are mostly concerned with keeping the population of the city under control and can be quickly summarized as follows:
- Humans have few rights, and human women even fewer;
- It is strictly forbidden to import living creatures through the Fogs and into the city;
- Slaves are not allowed to conceive children;
- Citizenship must be earned.
Great Houses
There are four Great Houses that control the remaining four quarters within the city:
