Ending the day with positive Guilt results in spoiling. Make sure to match the level of Guilt to the level of punishment. A punishment that exceeds the sin or a punishment for no reason at all increases Despair, while a punishment less severe than appropriate increases Spoiling. An appropriate level of punishment reduces Pride and increases Taming.

Repeating a same punishment in one same day will make it less likely to success and less effective.

Punishment can also be unsuccessful if the slave doesn't fear it enough. In that case, her Fear, Habit, and Taming decrease, while her Nature increases.

If the slave's Empathy is greater than the punishment's Sensitivity Threshold, her Empathy will decrease. Physical punishments can cause wounds, traces of beatings, scarring, bruising, and reduced Endurance.

Psychological Pressure

Effectiveness depends on Aura and Dominance.

Making a threat more than once without following through will make the threat ineffective. The torture threat can be fulfilled by most punishments, the sale threat can be fulfilled by the 'drive out the house' and 'out with the trash' interactions, and the death threat can be fulfilled by selecting and subsequently cancelling any of the execution options, cancelling selling her to the butcher, or by executing a prisoner. Sale threats and death threats may not be considered fulfilled if the method of fulfillment is used too frequently. Even if death threats are fulfilled, threatening a slave with death is only effective at most 3 times per slave, as is threatening a slave with sale.

Battering

Effectiveness depends mostly on Strength. Dominance and Fighter skill help too.

Flagellation

Each flagellation punishment can increase the master's skill up to the severity of the punishment (for example, 'flog with belt' can grant experience up to flagellation level 2 (C+) and 'flog with whip' can grant experience up to flagellation level 5 (S+)). Flogging with cane, lash or whip requires a Dungeon. Flog with lash requires a Lash ($10). Flog with whip requires a Whip ($50). These items can be bought at Manhunter's Armory in the Trade Square part of White Town. Flagellation skill can also be raised through sparring matches without limit if the player wields a lash or whip in combat.

Erotic bondage and painful bondage will have severity 4 if the slave's guilt is 4 or greater, otherwise they will have severity 3. This means they can be used as appropriate punishments for guilt levels 3 and 4. This also modifies the skill gain cap of the punishment: normally the punishments can only increase the slaver's bondage skill to a maximum of 3 (B+), but they can grant experience up to bondage skill level 4 (A+) if used on slaves with at least 4 guilt. Similarly, rope rack's severity is 4 or 5 depending on the slave's guilt. Deprivation requires Deprivation Suit ($50) from Steel Rose in Necropolis. Rope saddle, Hang by the legs, and Rope rack require a Dungeon.

Shaming

Effectiveness depends on slave's Pride. If the slave's mental status is 'frightened' (described as 'trembling all over' in the rules screen), shaming punishments will immediately increase awareness to match the severity of the punishment, regardless of the slave's guilt. This means that if a slave is frightened, the 'public toilet' punishment can bring them from 0 awareness to 5 awareness instantly.

Dog rape shows at the position of public toilet with a possibility of 1/4 if the dog mating skill of the slave is less than 2 and she's not revealed as a purist or pervert.

Example of Punishment

Only available if you have a prisoner in the Dungeon. Effectiveness depends on Dominance and relevant skills. The first time a slave witnesses an execution, they will immediately gain 2 full taming levels, regardless of their current taming level. Compassionate slaves witnessing an execution will immediately reach level 5 fear, while non-compassionate non-sadistic slaves will immediately gain 1 level of fear, regardless of their current fear level.

Cruciato

Instead of using an option from the punishments menu, you can use the Cruciato spell for $5. The advantage is that it causes no negative physical effects or Empathy loss, and it is appropriate for any level of Guilt. However, the sparks can add up if you overuse this option.
